Winter Around The World

A round of applause and a thank you to each artist who competed this year. Not only did the artists create for a cause, they were tough competitors! We have never seen a race so close with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place flip-flopping back and forth until the very end. Congratulations to all.

Calm Morning At The North Pole
"Calm Morning at the North Pole" is an oil painting on stretched canvas, inspired by the travels of the artist (a Floridian native) to the Swiss Alps to see snow for the first time. The aim of this composition was to portray some of the symbols of Christmas in a unique, less traditional way to inspire the imagination of the viewer. The saturated, vibrant warm colors in the sky and frozen lake reflection and the icy cool blues of a frosty winterscape combine to achieve a dynamic effect of warming the soul of the viewer through the brilliant colors of the sunrise while simultaneously helping them imagine the sharp chill of a frigid morning in a frozen, magical place. Although the artist envisioned Santa Claus with one of his reindeer at home at the North Pole on a quiet morning, the connotations of the imagery and focal point of the painting are deliberately subjective enough to appeal to any audience member, not only those of a particular cultural background.

Winter in The Sequoias
This original landscape painting is created with watercolor and acrylic paint. Winter has come amongst this giant Sequoia tree grove and these two people in the bottom center are taking it all in. This artwork shows the grandeur of these ancient sequoia trees that can be nearly 275 feet tall but among that there is a message. Sequoia trees actually don’t spread their seeds easily to plant more trees unless there’s a forest fire. Only heat from the adversity of a fire can open cones on the trees that contain several Sequoia seeds that then fall into the nutrient rich soil below. In this art piece, I wanted to show the wonder of Winter while also tying in the symbolism of how hardships can actually produce growth, endurance, and perseverance if we press on. The shining rays of sunlight peeping through the branches represent the new hope that things will and can get better.

Penguins Decorating a Tree
I came across some adorable baby penguin photos that uplifted my spirits and inspired me to make this bright and colorful artwork. A penguin family is decorating a tree they made from snow. One parent is using an ice block to reach the top of the tree, while the other parent encourages the baby penguin to place the last ornament on the tree. I used ink on watercolor paper size 11" x 11".
